Monrovia Canyon Park - Acorn Woodpeckers

(Melanerpes formicivorus)

A pair of Acorn Woodpeckers on a branch of their "granary tree" at the Eaton Canyon Natural Area park. The bird on the left is a male because his red "cap" touches the white forehead. The female has a black band separating the red cap from the white forehead. These communal birds are also seen in and around Monrovia Canyon Park. Click on the photo for more info.
